For quite awhile now I have been hearing from friends about their experiences with Flock, the social networking web browser. I had always intended to give it a shot, but never found the time. I finally decided to download it and try it today after Veronica Belmont covered the 1.0 version they've unveiled on her video podcast Mahalo Daily with Veronica Belmont.
I'm also particularly enthused with Second Rotation, a new service that is aiming to keep old electronics out of landfills by offering cash for them and by making an effort to streamline the responsible recycling process for electronics consumers. I'm considering sending some old Motorola V555 phones to their final resting place through them.
The Sword and Laser is a science fiction and fantasy themed book club, created by Tom Merritt and Veronica Belmont, that my wife and I joined back around the beginning of October. The focus of the book club is to create a stronger community of sci-fi/fantasy buffs who read and enjoy both genres.
The first book the group selected for the month of October was Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass, the 1st in His Dark Materials trilogy). I should add that The Golden Compass film adaptation is scheduled to be released on December 7th.
The second, and current book we are reading for the month of December, is Orson Scott Card's classic sci-fi novel, Ender's Game.
If you happen to be a fan of these genres and enjoy discussing literature with other geeks, feel free to join us. Voting by the community for the January 2008 book selection will likely begin in the next two to three weeks.
I'd neglected to mention that I've joined the Alea Iacta Est role-playing guild on the Earthen Ring server of World of Warcraft this past week.
"Alea Iacta Est" is Latin for "The die has been cast". These words were reportedly uttered by Caesar when he crossed the Rubicon river with his troops on January 10th, of 49 BC on his return to Rome in complete defiance of the Roman Senate by refusing to disband his army outside of the city limits. The Roman Senate had warned that such an action would be cause for War, thus the phrase.
The guild was founded by Scott Johnson host of the podcasts The Instance, Extra Life Radio, as well as his webcomic My Extra Life, and co-hosts Randy Deluxe and Andrew.
Other podcast founders and/or membersinclude Veronica Belmont from CNET ( most notably the Buzz Out Loud Podcast), Len and Nora of Jawbone Radio, Brian Ibbot of the Coverville Podcast, members from the WoW Add-ons Podcast, and Leo Laporte of TWiT.tv podcast network fame.
The guild is exploding in size. It has been loads of fun hanging out with similar minded, crazy and fun people who treat each other with respect and share incredibly sharp sense of intelligence and wit.
If you are a fan of our band or any of these podcasts/podcasters feel free to drop by and check out the guild sometime.
